The Revised English Bible
REB Bible Study Modules
The
Revised English Bible is a revision of the New English Bible (NEB). Like the
NEB, the REB is a British translation that uses British idioms, spelling,
and phraseology. The revision of the NEB that produced the REB was sponsored
by all the main British churches. It was designed for public reading
as well as for private study, and makes use of gender-inclusive language
where the original texts allow.
This version of the Revised English Bible contains all of the text, explanatory information, and footnotes of Cambridge University Press's printed edition; including the Apocrypha.
This Revised English Bible (REB) module was created under license from the Syndicate of the Press of the University of Cambridge. The Revised English Bible © 1989 by Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press.

This REB module for contains everything found in the Cambridge University Press edition of The Revised English Bible with Apocrypha:
While these REB packages were created from the same electronic files used to typeset the printed edition of the REB, a Bible study programme's presentation of the Bible differs from a printed book and those differences have necessitated that some compromises be made in the presentation of the REB text and its footnotes. The major differences from the printed edition are as follows:
| Section | Printed Edition | theWord |
|---|---|---|
| Table of Contents | The printed edition provides a table of contents. | The REB Table of Contents has not been reproduced since theWordTM provides its own table of contents mechanism. |
| Front Matter | The printed edition typesets a preface before each of the Old Testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament sections of the Bible. | The REB front matter material is presented within the REB.apoc book that accompanies the Bible module itself. |
| Verses vs. Paragraphs | The printed edition groups verses into paragraphs. | theWord will display paragraphs in the same manner as the printed edition, or show each verse individually; as the user would prefer. |
| Verse Ranges | The REB sometimes groups verses together and marks a particular section with a verse range. | Theses editions
displays such text in the verse marked by the start of the range, and
insert verse numbers showing the range; for example, for Genesis 7:8–9: Gen 7:8 8–9And to him on board… |
| Footnote Ranges | Footnotes attached to a range of verses are indicated as such at the bottom of the page; but, because no footnote indicators appear within the text nothing special is done to tie these back into the text. | For footnotes tied
to a range of verses, these editions insert the footnote marker into the
first verse of the range, and shows the range at the start of the
footnote text; for example: Gen 1:1 [1–2]In . . . earth was: or When God began to… |
| Footnote Markers | the printed edition of the REB does not provide footnote markers within the REB text. This was a conscious choice of the REB's editorial committee: they did not want to draw undue attention to the footnotes. | This theWordTM edition provides numbered footnote markers; since, unlike the printed edition, the footnotes are not plainly visible at the bottom of each page. |
| Placement of Apocrypha | The printed edition groups the Apocrypha text into a separate section of the Bible | theWordTM separates the Apocrypha into a separate "book"; displaying it in a separate panel within the application. |
| Typographic Presentation | The printed REB uses vertical spacing and horizontal indentation of the text as part of how it communicates the organisation of the Bible text. | The theWordTM edition duplicates most of the printed edition's horizontal indentation; but, the vertical spacing is generally not reproduced. |
